“Slices for SEG,” pie-baking contest and social, was held the afternoon of Sunday, March 8. A total of seventeen pies were entered in the contest, with the proceeds to benefit Social Entrepreneurs of Grinnell, the charity that seeks to offer no-interest loans to those who might otherwise turn to predatory lenders to meet emergency financial needs.
Three judges tasted each pie and cast their ballots in four classes of competition. Thank you to the volunteer judges, Sharon Falck, Dan Agnew, and Tim Dill, for their interest in and support of this event! The prize-winning pies for each class were:
American Classic (apple or cherry)
First Place: Janice Logan
Second Place: Twila Rosenow
Third Place: Howard McDonough
Other Fruit Pies
First Place: Gailanne Dill
Second Place: Howard McDonough
Third Place: Allen Ricks
Cream/Custard Pies
First Place: Mark Levandoski
Second Place: Vanessa Preast
Third Place: Mark Levandoski
Specialty Pies
First Place: Zoe Dill
Second Place: Mark Levandoski
Third Place: Nancy Brown
After the close competition, the judges reviewed the first place pies in each category and narrowed the quest for the champion pie, overall. Mark Levandoski’s Chess Pie (Cream/Custard Class) was named the most outstanding pie entry. Congratulations to these winners, and thank you to all who entered the 2020 competition!
Following the judging, the first-place pies were sold at silent auction, and all other pies were enjoyed at the pie social, with all donations going to SEG. Thank you to the greater Grinnell community for the strong support of this worthy event!
