Spaulding Center Begins “3rd” Year
The Spaulding Center for Transportation, home to the Iowa Transportation Museum and an events center, is good for Iowa and Grinnell
The Spaulding Center has successfully completed its first 2 years of operation and is optimistically looking forward to the years ahead.
The Iowa Transportation Museum is a museum specifically developed to tell the story of Iowa’s rich transportation history and honor the people who made it happen. The 6th Annual Transportation Hero Ceremony will be held on May 16 to honor the 2014 class of transportation heroes; this will bring the total to over 70 inductees.
One of the primary missions of the ITM is to reach out to youth. Utilizing the Iowa CORE system as a guideline, 178 students have had this experience through scheduled field trips to the museum. Community members serve as education leaders at each of the eight learning centers.
Since the official opening on May 17, 2013 over 1,400 people have visited the museum; traveling from 28 different states, 136 communities and 2 countries overseas.
The first official public event was held at the Spaulding Center in April 2012. During the past 2 years 38 receptions, private parties and business meetings have been held by various groups or businesses from all over the State of Iowa. These events had an estimated attendance of 5,280.
During the past 2 years the Spaulding Center has hosted 17 special transportation and other related programs for children and adults, with an estimated attendance of 1,370. Additional programs are already being planned for 2014.
The Spaulding Center has a positive impact on our community’s local food caterers. These businesses are utilized to provide lunches and meals as required for the various events and programs.
Many of the out of town guests and visitors attending the events at the Spaulding Center utilize the lodging facilities in the Grinnell area.
Due to the interest created after the ITM facility was completed, several real estate developers contacted the ITM recognizing the potential for further restoration and development of the ITM Campus. Hubbell Realty will begin construction of loft style apartments in the fall of 2014.
The Iowa Transportation Museum is a registered 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. Charitable contributions to the ITM can assist in assuring the operation of the facility for future generations. Exhibits and public programs are funded from contributions.
