Renovations bring new life to Oakland Acres Golf Club

In 2012 Larry and his son Jim took ownership of the Oakland Acres Golf Club. As a long standing member of the Grinnell community, Heishman knew that there was every opportunity for a business to grow and thrive in Grinnell, especially the golf course.

“When I learned that the land was for sale, I knew that Jim and I were up for the challenge of bringing the course back to life,” Heishman said.

Over the last two years, the father and son duo has worked hard to update and enhance the club’s facilities and amenities.

Last year during the Thanksgiving holiday, the Heishman’s unveiled a brand new club house. It features the latest technology for golfers including two virtual simulators that are updated monthly with novel and exciting golfing challenges. Golfers can use the simulators to help them measure critical ball and club parameters including ball speed, club speed, launch angle, club face angle, ball spin and spin axis at high accuracy.

“The simulators present members with an ever changing golf environment by giving them the opportunity to play at some of the best golf courses in the country without ever having to leave the club,” Heishman said.

The virtual courses include premier golfing venues such as Pebble Beach, Pinehurst, Kiawah Island, Spyglass, Harbourtowne, Troon North, Bethpage Black, and Banff Springs–just to name a few.

The new club house also has a sports bar with 11 big screen televisions, a large reception area that accommodates 150 to 200 people and a kitchen that is open seven days per week.

The warm colors and large brick fireplace make the clubhouse feel cozy and inviting and the many large windows offer beautiful views of the 18-hole golf course. The reception area is a beautiful venue for weddings, receptions, business meetings and parties of all kinds.

With warm weather ahead, golfers can take advantage of the course featuring multiple golf-training facilities, a golf range, a practice putting green, a pro golf shop and two completely renovated golf greens.

Golf leagues run all summer long with men’s, women’s and couple’s leagues meeting weekly. For those who may need a little extra help with their golf game, or those who just want to brush up on some of the basics, both group and private lessons are available from a certified golf instructor.
