Loft Theatre to Host Central Iowa Premiere of Housebroken
Grinnell, Iowa – The Grinnell Area Arts Council is excited to announce that the Loft Theatre located at the Grinnell Arts Center in historic downtown Grinnell will host the Central Iowa premiere of the play, Housebroken, for one night only on Saturday, May 2 at 7:30 pm. A talkback with the artist will follow the performance. Tickets can be purchased for $15 ($5 for students) online at www.grinnellarts.org or in person during regular business hours at Brown’s Shoe Fit, McNally’s, and at the Grinnell Arts Center. As with all Loft Theatre performances, there will be limited seating available.
Housebroken is a new solo show written and starring Megan Gogerty, directed by Alexis Chamow, and produced by the Riverside Theatre in Iowa City. Megan takes the audience through the hilarious and sometimes heartbreaking journey of buying and selling a house, and shares her own experience of how the process can change the way you look at the world, and yourself. The offers, the counter-offers, the closings that don’t close, the granite countertops and the cracked foundations cause Megan to question the truth of the American Dream.
“We are thrilled the Grinnell Arts Center has been selected as the location of the Central Iowa premiere of Housebroken,” notes Christian Lutz, the arts council’s executive director. “This production, thanks to two very generous and supportive sponsors, allows us to expand the programming possibilities for such a unique and special venue.”
The production is being sponsored by two local real estate agencies, RE/MAX Partners Realty and Ramsey-Weeks, Inc. “Housing is something that is always on the mind of Grinnell residents. The connection between industry and art for this event draws a clear connecting line between our service and our commitment to the Grinnell culture,” states Matt Karjalahti with RE/MAX Partners Realty. Paul Pohlson, vice president at Ramsey-Weeks adds, “We are excited about being a part of Housebroken, as why not have fun with the processes of purchasing a home and having a fun evening at the theatre?”
Gogerty is a playwright, monologist, and comedian with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Iowa and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin. She currently serves as a lecturer at the University of Iowa in musical theatre, dramatic literature, and playwriting, and is the artistic associate at the Riverside Theatre. Previously, she was the playwright-in-residence at Dartington College of the Arts, the South Carolina Governor’s School for Performing Arts, and Coe College. Gogerty has written and appeared previously in the solo shows Feet First in the Water with a Baby in My Teeth and Hillary Clinton Got Me Pregnant which was named one of the Top Ten Best Shows of 2009 by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
