Genesis Development, the Grinnell-based organization that provides programming for persons with disabilities, received the funding support of 100 + People Who Care – Grinnell at the July 23rd membership meeting.  Genesis Development will utilize the nearly $ 13,000 received to help purchase a multi-passenger, handicapped-accessible van to be used to transport clients to appointments and events in the greater Grinnell area.

Genesis Development, now in its 45thyear of creating opportunities for people with disabilities in fourteen Iowa communities, has been serving Grinnell for more than ten years.  There are currently 35 adults receiving support and services in the Grinnell area. These are the ones who will be served, as they travel to medical appointments, employment, and a variety of social outings, in the comfort and safety of a new van.

100 + People Who Care – Grinnell welcomed four new members at the July 23rdmeeting, bringing total membership to 128.  The members heard three presentations from nominated entities before voting, with the Genesis Development project receiving plurality support.  At the conclusion of the meeting, each member wrote a $ 100 check to Genesis Development. This resulted in a pooled philanthropic gift of $ 12,800 toward the van replacement project.

Those attending the 100 + People Who Care meeting also heard a stewardship report from Melissa Ford of the Poweshiek County Dental Coalition.  Melissa shared that the Dental Coalition was able to utilize the funding received through last quarter’s 100 + People Who Care – Grinnell meeting to broaden the Coalition’s effective outreach to underserved individuals and families.  She expressed, again, the Coalition’s profound appreciation for the community’s support through 100 + People Who Care – Grinnell.

The July 23 meeting was the tenth voting meeting for 100 + People Who Care – Grinnell.  Since organizing in January, 2017, the philanthropy group has generated nearly $ 95,000 in new support of worthy causes in the greater Grinnell area.  Grinnell’s chapter of 100 + People Who Care is one of more than 600 such entities across the U.S. and Canada, based on the very simple concept that many people, pooling modest donations four times per year, can significantly benefit their communities.  Project funding is determined by the members at the quarterly meetings, with the focus always on local or area charitable needs.

Membership remains open to all.  The next meeting of 100 + People Who Care – Grinnell will be Tuesday, October 22, 2019. It will be held in the St. Mary Church Parish Hall, starting at 5:30 p.m.  For further information about 100 + People Who Care – Grinnell, please call any of the founding board members:  Christine Day, 641-485-6180; Dennis Day, 641-485-6118; Donna Ricks, 319-269-9626; or Al Ricks, 319-269-3475.  Christine is the point of contact for receiving donations for this quarter’s project or for making a nomination at the October meeting.  Christine’s e-mail address is  Donna is the point of contact for membership applications and records, and her e-mail address is
