Larry Boesenberg, Chair of Poweshiek Iowa Development, welcomed guests and introduced the current board of directors. Laura Manatt, Executive Director, presented the current initiatives and the annual report, including an update on the Community Development Block Grants and the recent application for Iowa Reinvestment Act funds. Larry then held board elections, during which two board members terms were renewed. Aaron McCaslen and Lori O’Donnell Hinshaw were both voted on for another 3-year term.

Larry Jansen, President and CEO of Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance, then spoke about the company’s most recent expansion, just off Interstate 80 at their headquarters. This summer, Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company will be unveiling their new conference and training center at their Annual Meeting. Larry also detailed the company’s future business goals and the exciting economic development efforts they have made these past few years. These development efforts include emphasis on employee-oriented business growth and Grinnell Mutual’s role as a key economic driver in the county and community.

Following Larry Jansen was keynote speaker and Iowa Economic Development Director, Debi Durham. Debi has been extremely supportive of economic revitalization efforts in Poweshiek County, and talked extensively about the Governor’s workforce, local talent retention, addressing the skilled labor shortage, and future key industries within Iowa’s economy. She also outlined that in order to continue to grow and thrive, Iowa should focus on what it’s good at which includes being a strong player in the financial services, advance manufacturing and bio sciences.

All three speakers left time for questions at the end.
