Local Animal Shelter Needs Your Support
Iowa winters can be harsh, and this winter has been exceptionally tough on the Poweshiek Animal League Shelter (PALS). Volunteer numbers are down, supplies are depleted, maintenance is needed, and sadly, there is only enough money to keep the shelter open for another month or two.
“The animal shelter truly needs your support right now,” says Dianna Townsend, PALS board president. “Our financial state is critical. We will be lucky to keep our doors open for another two months with our current savings. With spring around the corner, volunteers are expecting to see an increase in kitten and puppy litters, and we just don’t know how we are going to care for these animals in need.”
The shelter is asking for the community to offer support through monetary donations, donations of supplies, and volunteering time. The shelter is always in need of items like cat litter, Dawn dish soap, paper towels, and general cleaning items. The shelter also desperately needs volunteers who wish to work at the shelter, Monday through Sunday, at 7 a.m., 5 p.m. or 9 p.m. Shelter shifts last approximately an hour and a half, and require volunteers to clean and care for cats or dogs. Volunteers may choose the day of the week and time that works best with their schedule. Volunteers can also give time helping with general maintenance like repairing kennels and fences. The shelter is also in need of gravel and a storage shed.
The animal shelter is currently caring for 40 cats and 12 dogs. The shelter typically sees an increase in numbers as spring approaches.
