Middle Way Farm holds annual fall field day and open house
Middle Way Farm will be holding its annual farm field day and open house on Saturday, September 12 from 4-7 pm. Middle Way Farm is a a 2 acre market garden operated by Jordan Scheibel located just north of Grinnell, The event is a chance for customers and friends of the farm to see where and how their produce comes to them and enjoy company and good food with friends, community members, and fellow local food eaters. The event is free and open to the public and visitors may come for part or all of the day. Children are welcome.
A farm tour will start shortly after 4 pm once everyone has gathered. Visitors will be able to see the whole Middle Way Farm operation from greenhouse to field to the wash, pack, and cooler area. The tour will include looking at produce in the field, learning about the farm’s growing methods, hearing about this season’s successes and challenges, and finding out what the farmer is learning about and trying next year.
A potluck will start at 5 pm. The farm will provide a few main dishes (including vegetarian/vegan options) and beverages. Visitors are asked to bring a salad, side dish, dessert, or drinks to share. Local ingredients are encouraged but not required. Visitors are asked to bring their own tableware if possible to cut down on clean-up and make a label for their potluck dish with the dish’s name, their name, listing ingredients and origins, and any allergens to be aware of. Dinner will be picnic style outside as long as the weather is good. At 7 pm, after the dinner and clean-up, those who would like to stay later can hang out around the fire to enjoy an early autumn night on the farm.
Middle Way Farm coexists alongside the Grin City Collective artist residency, which will be hosting artists as part of its fall session during the field day. There will be chances to informally explore the property along with the formal farm tour led by Jordan. RSVPs are appreciated but not required. Middle Way Farm is a commercial market garden located at the Grin City Collective artist residency north of Grinnell and run by Jordan Scheibel. The farm is in the midst of a 3 year transition to certified organic production, with certification anticipated in 2016. Started in 2013, Middle Way Farm offers high quality, fresh, chemical free produce, fruit, herbs, flowers, and plant starts for sale weekly at the Thursday Grinnell Farmers Market from May-October, the Cedar Rapids Farmers Market June-September, and through a weekly, 50 member CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) share offered June-October.
