MARCHING FORTH FOR COMMUNITY
On Wednesday, March 4th, teams of current members of the Community Fund for Poweshiek County were given their marching orders to help grow the fund. Launched in 2009, the Community Fund for Poweshiek County is an initiative to engage the community in building a permanent resource devoted to Poweshiek County. Earnings from this permanent fund are distributed in the form of grants to address County needs. In 2013, The Community Fund received over $25,000 in grant requests and was able to fund just over $3,000. In an effort to award more grants in Poweshiek County the board has set a goal of reaching 500 members in 2015.
According to Rachel Bly, chair of the Friendraising Committee, “We need to grow The Community Fund so that in the future we can award more grants. The size and number of grants each year is dependent on annual growth of the Community Fund and the sooner we can get to a million dollar endowment, the more grants we will be able to fund. To do this, we decided to engage current members of the fund to help us and March 4th was the perfect opportunity to issue the March Forth for Community challenge.”
GPCF is using a contest with teams to grow the Community Fund. Each team of approximately 10 members, chaired by board members and staff of the GPCF has until April 24th to spread the message of the Community Fund for Poweshiek County to their neighbors, family, friends or colleagues. Teams with the most new members and money donated towards the Community Fund will be awarded prizes on that date. Each team will be asking new membersto pledge $100 per year for 10 years and couples to pledge $200 a year for 10 years. Donations are eligible for a 25% State of Iowa tax credit (Endow IA) as well as a Federal tax deduction. To date, the Community Fund has 350 members and the goal is to reach 1,000 members within the next 5 years.
