100th Birthday PartyDid you know the Merchants National Bank building, also known as the Jewel Box Bank, was built 100 years ago? It opened its doors as a bank on New Years Day of 1915, meaning we have a 100 year birthday to celebrate in 2015!The Jewel Box Bank is a remarkable piece of architecture and we are very fortunate it has survived all these years. It has become a Grinnell icon and a landmark that attracts visitors to our community. We enjoy using the space as our office and Grinnell Visitor Center and are thankful to all of the docents who help us keep it open on the weekends. Here’s a bit of history on the building if you aren’t familiar. How do you think we should celebrate the centennial? Ideas I’ve received so far include a New Year’s Eve cocktail party, concerts, lectures, guided tours, film showings, educational displays, and commemorative postcards or coins. We have already begun to meet with a small committee to plan a centennial celebration. If you are interested in being involved with that committee, please let me know.If you have any ideas on how you think we should celebrate this beautiful building, send me an email. I’m also always looking for weekend docents for the building if you know anyone. It’s a beautiful space to spend a few hours and I promise it’s not a difficult job. Enjoy this gorgeous fall day!-Emily CountsP.S. Congratulations to Prairie Canary for being named to VacationHomeRentals.com’s list as the best restaurant in the entire state of Iowa! Prairie Canary is one of 37 amazing restaurants here in Grinnell. How about we all forget about cooking tonight and eat out at a Grinnell restaurant?
