Farmers Market season begins Thursday May 15 in Grinnell

GRINNELL – Mark your calendar for the first Grinnell Farmers Market of the season on May 15 from 3 to 6 p.m. This year’s market includes a variety of fresh produce, baked goods and homemade items. Many vendors are returning this year and the Market is also welcoming more than a dozen new vendors.

The first market will take place on Thursday, May 15. Markets will take place each Thursday and Saturday until October 25, with Thursday markets open from 3 to 6 p.m. and Saturday markets open from 10 a.m. to noon. Venders from the area will be set up around Central Park. The 2014 Market is sponsored by Grinnell College and University of Iowa Community Credit Union.

There will be two new elements to the market this year. The first addition is recipe cards that will be placed throughout the market and posted to the Grinnell Farmers Market Facebook page. The recipe cards will provide helpful recipes that can be made using items from the market. Ingredients available at the market will be underlined on the card to make shopping easier.

The other addition to this year’s market is a weekly vendor spotlight. Each week, one vendor will be highlighted on the Facebook page. These profiles will include information and photographs of the vendor(s) and their products.

Last year, the market launched a punch card promotion. This promotion will be continued in 2014 with prize drawings taking place more often. Shoppers can pick up their punch card from vendors at any of the markets and earn punches for each purchase.

Completed punch cards can be turned in at the Grinnell Area Chamber of Commerce office or any vendor. Cards received will then be entered into a weekly drawing for a gift basket filled with items from vendors.
