by Teresa McCall….Earlier today (September 14, 2016) at Grinnell College, Debi Durham, Director of the Iowa Economic Development Authority met with Teresa McCall, chair of the Grinnell Veterans Memorial Commission, Mike Olson, fundraising co-chair of the commission’s task force, and Grinnell City Manage, Russ Behrens, to discuss ways to facilitate cooperation among city leaders and the commission so that funding can be obtained through state funding streams. The meeting was a follow up to a phone conference Durham held with McCall, Olson, and Economic Development staff several weeks ago regarding the Veterans Building. Durham toured the building several weeks ago, and expressed her personal support of moving the Veterans Memorial Building Campaign forward. She noted that the building has historical significance and is architecturally unique for Grinnell, and it was her opinion that the building is worth saving. She also stated that it is a local cooperation is vital to moving the project forward, and that she would like to see that happen. Behrens suggested that perhaps the community could be invited to be part of the planning process for saving the building. The overall hope is that a more specific, detailed plan for the building can be developed so that the City Council may be more amenable to supporting the project.
