GRINNELL, Iowa — Georges Bizet’s “Carmen,” which tells the story of a gypsy seductress who lives by her own rules, will be streamed live at Grinnell College on Saturday, Feb. 2, as part of the Metropolitan Opera’s Live in HD Series.

WHAT:
The opera’s melodic sweep is as irresistible as the title character herself, a force of nature who has become a defining female cultural figure. “Carmen” was a scandal at its 1875 premiere in Paris, but soon after became a triumphal success and has remained one of the most frequently staged operas in the world.

WHO:
Mezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine reprises her remarkable portrayal of opera’s ultimate seductress, a triumph in her 2017 debut performance, with impassioned tenor Roberto Alagna as her lover, Don José. Omer Meir Wellber and Louis Langrée share conducting duties for Sir Richard Eyre’s powerful production, a Met favorite since its 2009 premiere.

WHEN:
Opera talk at 11:30 a.m., followed by the opera at noon on Saturday, Feb. 2.

WHERE:
Harris Center Cinema, 1114 10th Ave., Grinnell.

TICKETS:
Tickets are available at the Pioneer Bookshop and at the door the day of the show. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students, children under 12 and Met Opera members.
